Pussy Riot member and political activist Aysoltan Niyazova was arrested under false pretences at the Croatian border on May 29 2022. She is now in danger of being extradited to Turkmenistan where she could face the death penalty. Aysoltan Niyazova's arrest was reported on Instagram by fellow Pussy Riot member Olga Borisova. Niyazova was not provided with a lawyer or an interpreter for her trial in Croatia on May 30th. Following on from a popular Frontline Freelance Register online event with photojournalist Fabio Bucciarelli at the beginning of the pandemic about how to report on Covid safely, we hosted another event with him focusing on journalist safety in Ukraine. Fabio has recently returned from spending the first month of the war reporting for several European media outlets. He was in conversation with FFR Board Member Zoe Flood.

As part of its campaign for the safety of freelance journalists and local field producers in Ukraine, the Frontline Club and Frontline Freelance Register are running a series of HEFAT course in Lviv, Ukraine. The course is designed to be country specific and is aimed at people who will traveling to, and working in, Ukraine's hot spots. The course will be in two sections. The first, security and hostile environment training, will be classroom based in Lviv centre and will cover all aspects of working in a hostile environment.

FFR elects its board through its membership every two years.  From January 2020 and for another 2 years, Zoe Flood, Laura Battaglia al Jalal, Vaughan Smith, Pierre Alozie, Sharron Ward, Anna Lekas Miller and Ramon Campos Iriarte are now elected members of the board of the Frontline Freelance Register.  

Publishing agreements or contracts have a direct impact on the safety of freelance journalists. In partnership with the ACOS Alliance and with the legal support of The Cyrus R. Vance Center for International Justice, we have developed a template agreement and two supportive documents: Our Model Freelance Publishing Agreement seeks to facilitate an agreement between media companies and freelance journalists on terms that protect the interests and safety of the journalists. Pay directly impacts freelance journalists’ safety wide-ranging survey reveals  FFR announced at the Global Conference on Media Freedom on 10 July, the preliminary results of its survey - The State of Freelancing in 2019. The survey canvassed freelance journalists who are exposed to risk about their work practices and safety concerns. Over 380 freelance journalists from 70 countries participated, making it one of the most wide-reaching surveys of its kind.   A strong theme that emerges from the results is how financial considerations directly impact a freelance journalist’s ability to report safely.   FFR has always equated fair and timely pay with safety....
