When freelancers apply to the Frontline Freelance Register, they sign up to follow a Code of Conduct of Professional Practice in their work. The code covers ethical journalistic and safety practices.

Both the ‘Safety Principles and Practices guidelines for working with freelancers and our own, forthcoming, Best Practice guidelines for working with freelancers, require both news organisations and freelancers to conduct themselves with a concern for excellent journalism and a culture of safety and concern for the well-being of those gathering news.

As a professional freelance journalist who takes physical risks, it’s essential to be able to meet these standards. This section of our website looks at some of the key ways you can do this and provides links and resources to help journalists do this.

We’ve also added some sections to help you pitch your stories and get them noticed and to ensure you get paid properly!
