I worked as a journalist in Russia between 1999 and 2006, mainly for Reuters. I focused on Chechnya and the north Caucasus, which became the subject of my first book: Let Our Fame be Great, which won the Cornelius Ryan prize and was short listed for the Orwell prize.

My second book - The Last Man in Russia - addresses the Russian demographic crisis. It came out in 2012 and has been short listed for the Dolman prize. I write articles for magazines, including The New Statesman and The New Republic, and take photos. My first full length radio documentary was broadcast on BBC radio 4 in June, and I hope to make more. I also edit the Caucasus service of the Institute of War and Peace Reporting.

I am married, with two sons, and live in London.
