My first work as a Journalist, while also experience working in a conflict invironment, was during the military coup in Honduras, June-July 2009. After that I eventually went back to finishing my studies in Political Science and Cultural Antropology focused on armed conflicts, and my Master in Journalism. I have worked in various places ever since, but mainly focused on the ongoing conflict in Syria and Iraq. I have made several trips to Syria and it's neighbouring countries during the war, to cover the humanitarian crisis, the fighting and the political development. In August, 2014 I witnessed the Yezidis of Shingal, Iraq, getting evacuated from the onslaught of ISIS from inside Syria where they entered. In October 2014 I became the last foreign journalist to report from Syria's Kobane before ISIS entered the city. In February 2015 I was imprisoned by the Syrian regime in northeastern Syria, together with ISIS fighters, then flown down to Damascus and another prison with the State Security intelligence branch. I have continued working in the area and also Syria, after eventually being released. In April 2016 my book "Kobane" was published, a book about the war in Syria and specifically the role of the Syrian Kurds before and after the famous battle in Kobane, which made them allies to the West. |
