Security is an issue we all take seriously. The difference is that if an independent journalist gets kidnapped or killed, he or she will most likely be labelled as ‘an irresponsible daredevil'. If a staffer from a large organisation is kidnapped, he or she will most likely get television interviews and praise for ‘risking it all' to get the story.

On February 12th 2015, at Columbia Journalism School, join an unprecedented coalition of leading news companies, freelance journalism organizations and press-freedom advocates responding to this crisis by launching global safety principles and practices for international news organizations and the freelancers who work with them.

Along with other journalist groups, press-freedom organisations, editors, and media executives, FFR was invited to a conference on the safety of journalists, organised by the US state department in Washington, DC, in January. It’s never easy to tell just how useful these conferences are but we feel that this one wasn’t entirely wasted for two reasons.
