Åsa Welander is a multimedia freelance journalist based in Mexico City since 2013, working in Latin America. She is mainly focusing on social issues such as human rights, gender, migration and violence, but also covering politics and environmental issues. Frequently working for some of Sweden’s biggest publications and the Swedish Public Radio, her work has also been featured by media such as the NPR, PRI and El País. Born in Sweden she has a masters degree in journalism and has also studied international development and languages. She has participated in a Hostile Environment Awareness Training (HEAT) course.
